AT a time when the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir has nosedived and targeted killings are continuous, the Narendra Modi government said that Dubai has signed an accord to set up infrastructure in the union territory. No figure for the value of the accord was, however, shared, Reuters reported.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the local administration by Dubai is the first investment agreement by a foreign government in the region after the scrapping of special status to Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019 and the division of the state into two union territories.

The government said the agreement will see Dubai building infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, including industrial parks, information technology towers, logistics centres, a medical college and a speciality hospital, among others.

‘Condemn Kashmir killings but India-Pak game will happen’

“The world has started to recognize the pace (at) which Jammu and Kashmir is traversing on the development bandwagon,” Indian commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said in a statement.

The statement also said different entities from Dubai had shown keen interest in investment in Kashmir. Goyal was present at an event in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, where the union territory’s lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha was also present, Asian News International reported.

A number of civilians, including migrant workers from other states including those from the eastern state of Bihar, have lost lives in the recent weeks as terror activities have surged in the Valley, leaving common people in a state of fear.
