ENGLAND came back strongly on the morning of the fourth day of the third Test match against India at Headingley to pick the tourists’ final eight wickets for only 63 runs to win the match by an innings and runs and level the series 1-1.

India, who resumed the day from their overnight score of 215 for 2, lost Cheteshwar Pujara (91) without adding any run. Captain Virat Kohli, who was not out on 45, could add only 10 runs to his overnight score to fall at 55. It was only a matter of time since then for the England bowlers to complete the formalities. Ajinkya Rahane could score 10 off 25 while Ravindra Jadeja made a brisk 30 off 25 but it was never going to be enough. India were all out for 278 in their second innings, lasting only 19.3 overs against the new ball, to lose by an innings and 76 runs.

Ollie Robinson wreaked havoc in India’s second innings, taking five for 65 – his second five-wicket haul in the series after the first Test in Trent Bridge and finished a match-haul of seven scalps. He was adjudged the man of the match. Craig Overton, who played this game in place of an injured Mark Wood, took three for 47 to end up with six wickets.

Root’s three in three leave India battered

India were bundled out for a paltry 78 on the first day morning and England scored 432 in reply, thanks to a solid show with the bat by the Three Lions’ top order led by skipper Joe Root (121), registering a mammoth lead of 354 runs.

The fourth Test begins at the Oval on September 2.

Brief scores: India 78 & 278 (Cheteshwar Pujara 91, Virat Kohli 55, Ollie Robinson 5 for 65) lost to England 432 by an innings and 76 runs
