Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal, who is eyeing power for his party in the western state of Gujarat where elections will be due soon, on Saturday (29) launched a campaign in the state to pick the AAP’s chief ministerial candidate.

Putting the ball in people’s court, Kejriwal said in a press conference in Surat, “We want the people of Gujarat to tell us who should be the next CM. We’re issuing a number and an email id. You can send your opinions on it until 5 pm till November 3. We will announce the result on 4th Nov.”

“Who should be the next Gujarat chief minister? Please share your opinion,” Kejriwal said.

“For this, we are issuing a number 6357000360 to know the opinion of the public. On this number you can SMS or send WhatsApp message or send voice message. You can also email [email protected],” he added.

The campaign is the latest push by Kejriwal who has been aggressively campaigning in the state in a bid to topple prime minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has been ruling it for more than two decades now.

The AAP, which has made its presence felt in a number of local elections in Gujarat, has been holding rallies and making a number of pre-poll promises such as free electricity, better education, and healthcare facilities if it is voted to power.

The AAP won its second state earlier this year when it came to power in Punjab.

Hitting out at Gujarat’s BJP government, Arvind Kejriwal said, “People are fed up with inflation and unemployment. There is a discussion among people that as the Aam Aadmi Party is working in Delhi and Punjab, it has given relief from inflation.”

“BJP changed their Chief Minister one year ago. They first had Vijay Rupani and did not ask people. Why did they replace him with Bhupendra Patel? Does this mean that there was something wrong with Vijay Rupani?,” Kejriwal said at the news conference.

“When Vijay Rupani was brought, the public was not asked. It was decided from Delhi. In democracy, the people decide who will be the Chief Minister. Neither did you (BJP) ask in 2016, nor did you ask in 2021,” he said.

The Election Commission of India announced the date of elections in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh which is November 12 but did not reveal the schedule for the Gujarat polls.
