The Indian Army on Friday (12) foiled an infiltration bid by terrorists along the Line of Control in Uri in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, officials have said. A junior commissioner officer of the army was injured in an exchange of fire, NDTV reported.

According to sources in the armed forces, the attempt was supported by the neighbouring Pakistan to “disrupt G20 summit” which is scheduled from May 22 and 24.

A report by The Indian Express said that there has been a rise in the movement of terrorists in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir where 10 soldiers were martyred in two separate terror strikes since April 20, intelligence said.

Army Public Schools at various locations in the Jammu division were closed till May 20 as a precautionary measure after reports that terrorists may attack soft targets ahead of the G20 event.

The event will take place at Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) on the banks of Srinagar’s famous Dal Lake and is expected to have a positive impact on the region’s tourism and trade sectors.

“This desperate action by the terrorists, duly abetted by Pakistan army, is yet another failed attempt to disrupt the G20 Summit and create disturbance in the Valley,” a defence spokesperson was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Sources said an infiltration bid by terrorists across the LoC in Uri sector was foiled by the Indian Army, adding that a group of armed terrorists were engaged in an exchange of fire with the troops while trying to cross the LoC and were unsuccessful in their mission.

They also said a quadcopter was flown by the Pakistani Army to back the terrorists and it was spotted across the LoC. They added that it withdrew after being fired at.

A massive search operation is underway, officials added.
