INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi on Friday (10) said that as the world’s largest democracy, the country stands ready to work with its partners to strengthen democratic values across the globe, including in multilateral fora.

He made the remarks in a tweet a day after taking part in the Summit for Democracy hosted by US president Joe Biden.

“Happy to have participated in the Summit for Democracy at the invitation of President Biden. As the world’s largest democracy, India stands ready to work with our partners to strengthen democratic values globally, including in multilateral fora,” Modi tweeted.

During the virtual summit on Thursday (9), Modi said technology firms should contribute to preserving democratic societies as technology is capable of impacting democracy “positively or negatively”.

Representatives from more than a hundred nations attended the summit.

The summit, which will conclude on Friday, is Biden’s idea of bringing together democracies of the world to discuss and deliberate issues related to human rights, corruption and countering authoritarianism.

The summit excluded countries like Russia, China and Turkey, which Washington deems ‘undemocratic’.
