Former England captain Michael Vaughan is known for his controversial takes on cricket and his love-hate relationship with Indian fans is not something new to know. The 47-year-old found himself at the receiving end of a backlash from the Indian supporters after he came up with a take to react to India women’s team bowler Deepti Sharma’s running out of England tail-ender Charlotte Dean in the third and final one-day international between the two teams at Lord’s on Saturday (24).

The left-arm spinner ran Dean out at the non-striker’s end after she went out, a form of dismissal more commonly known as ‘Mankading’, to seal a 16-run victory for her side and bag the series for the visitors 3-0.

The International Cricket Council recently moved ‘Mankading’ from its “unfair play” section to the “run out” section but despite that, a number of England cricketers, both current and former, criticised the India spinner and her team for opting to run Dean out in that manner. The Indian team got tremendous support from its own cricketing fraternity. India captain Harmanpreet Kaur also strongly backed Sharma saying there was no crime committed.

“Mankad is in the rules, but I hope it’s not a go too tactic .. You surely don’t train all your lives to win a game using that tactic .. and I know Batters should train to stay behind the line but it stinks seeing a game won like that .. Yesterday was a bloody good game too #India,” Vaughan wrote in a Twitter post.

The Marylebone Cricket Club also removed ‘Mankading’ from the ‘unfair play’ category earlier this year.

The Indian fans hit out at Vaughan over his take and here are some reactions that he got. Some even posted clips from past games where England were accused of taking unfair means to dismiss opponent batters:
