Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja is making its way toward a potential Hollywood remake, and a major Hollywood name has now entered the conversation.

Producer Sudhan Sundaram confirmed that the makers were approached for the remake rights after the 2024 Tamil thriller performed strongly in China. A Hollywood agency is now working to set up the project with an A-list actor, with the film potentially going into production next year.

Matthew McConaughey’s name surfaces

There has been speculation on social media that Matthew McConaughey could take on the role played by Vijay Sethupathi in the original.

Addressing the speculation, Sundaram said McConaughey could be one of the actors the agency is discussing, but stressed that the agency would have to confirm any casting details.

“Maybe McConaughey is one of the stars they are talking to, but only the agency will be able to confirm,” he told The Times of India.

The project is still in development, and there has been no official announcement about its cast or Hollywood studio.

Why Maharaja caught Hollywood’s attention

Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, Maharaja follows a barber whose complaint about a missing dustbin leads him to a police station. The story gradually takes a much darker turn.

Vijay Sethupathi stars as the barber, with Anurag Kashyap playing the antagonist and Sanchana Namidass portraying Sethupathi’s daughter.

The film was released in 2024 and later premiered on Netflix. According to Sundaram, its strong run in China, including its performance at the box office and on OTT, led to the approach from a Hollywood agency for remake rights.

The remake is still being put together, but the possibility of an A-list Hollywood star joining the project adds a new layer to its development.
