The US Postal Service (USPS) has released a special Forever stamp celebrating Diwali, featuring a vibrant rangoli design that highlights one of the festival's most recognizable artistic traditions.
The US Embassy in India shared a glimpse of the newly issued stamp in a post on X, announcing that it is the second Diwali-themed stamp released by the USPS. The first was issued in 2016, making the latest release another recognition of the festival's cultural significance in the United States.
“Celebrate the festival of lights. Did you know? The US Postal Service just issued a Forever stamp celebrating Diwali! The new stamp is the second Diwali stamp issued by the USPS, following the first one issued in 2016,” the embassy wrote alongside a digital poster.
The USPS has also described the new issue as a celebration of the festival's central message.
“Celebrate the triumph of light over darkness with the Diwali Forever stamps,” reads a note on the postal service's website.
Why does the new Diwali stamp feature a rangoli?
The highlight of the stamp is its colorful rangoli artwork, a traditional decorative design created on floors using materials such as colored rice powder, chalk and flower petals.
Rangoli is commonly associated with Diwali celebrations, when families create intricate patterns at the entrances of their homes and in courtyards. The designs are often made in bright colors and are considered an important part of festive decorations.
The artwork gives the stamp a visual connection to the traditions of Diwali, rather than simply featuring the festival's name or a generic celebratory image.
Diwali, widely known as the festival of lights, is celebrated by millions of people around the world. The festival symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Homes, streets and public spaces are decorated with lamps, candles and colorful designs, while families come together to celebrate.
The USPS's decision to feature rangoli brings one of these cultural traditions into an everyday part of American life: sending mail.
What makes a Forever stamp special?
The new Diwali design belongs to the USPS Forever stamp category. These stamps retain their value for mailing a standard First-Class Mail letter, even when postal rates increase after their purchase.
The latest Diwali issuance is also notable because it comes during a landmark year for the United States. The country marks the 250th anniversary of its independence in 2026.
The USPS, which has a 250-year history, regularly issues commemorative stamps celebrating American history, culture and significant occasions.
By introducing another Diwali stamp after its 2016 release, the postal service is recognizing a festival that has become an important part of the country's multicultural celebrations.
