Why was Shah Rukh Khan missing on his midnight birthday fans meetup?

The superstar missed his traditional midnight balcony appearance for the fifth time in seven years, leaving fans with a handwritten note as reports linked his absence to Mannat's renovation and a possible King shoot in London.

Highlights:

  • The five-year count is specifically for missed Mannat balcony appearances, not five consecutive years. He appeared in 2022 and 2023.
  • The London shoot is attributed to NDTV's sources, not presented as a confirmed reason.
  • The 2021 Aryan Khan development is chronological context; it should not be presented as the confirmed reason for the absence.
  • The 2024 Diwali party explanation is attributed to Mid-Day, which described it as an inference.

  • For thousands of Shah Rukh Khan fans, November 2 is more than just a birthday. It is the night they gather outside Mannat, hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite superstar waving from his iconic balcony. But this year, as Shah Rukh turned 61, the familiar midnight tradition was missing once again.

Instead of appearing before the crowds, the actor chose to communicate through a handwritten message displayed on a giant screen outside his Mumbai residence. It read: “Thank you all for your wishes and love. Sending mine right back to you all.”

He signed off with ‘lots of love and a big hug’, but for fans who had travelled to Mannat hoping to see him in person, the message was a different kind of birthday greeting.

Why did Shah Rukh Khan skip his Mannat appearance this year?

The reason appears to be linked to the ongoing reconstruction and expansion of Mannat. According to Free Press Journal, the bungalow is undergoing extensive renovation work, which has forced Shah Rukh and his family to temporarily move out of their residence. This has made his usual balcony appearance difficult.

However, that is not the only explanation that emerged ahead of his birthday.

According to NDTV, sources had indicated that Shah Rukh was expected to be in London on November 2, where a song shoot for his upcoming film King was reportedly scheduled. The report also suggested that he was preparing for another dance number as work on the film's soundtrack continued.

While the London shoot was reported ahead of his birthday, the renovation explanation featured prominently in reports on Monday. There has been no official confirmation establishing the London schedule as the reason for his absence from Mannat.

Interestingly, the superstar was reportedly celebrating with family and friends at Mumbai's Taj hotel. According to The Times of India, he was later spotted leaving the venue, waving and blowing kisses to fans waiting outside.

Not the first time fans have missed the birthday balcony wave

This is the fifth time in seven years that Shah Rukh has skipped his customary Mannat appearance, with similar absences in 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025.

In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic changed the celebrations. Shah Rukh had personally requested fans not to gather outside Mannat, saying, “Iss baar ka pyaar...thodha door se yaar.” Fans instead organized virtual celebrations.

In 2021, the actor celebrated his 56th birthday away from Mannat, at his farmhouse. The absence came just days after his son Aryan Khan was released on bail in the cruise ship drugs case. According to India Today, the actor did not participate in the annual balcony greeting that year.

In 2024, Shah Rukh skipped the midnight appearance as he attended a Diwali party hosted by Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra, according to Mid-Day. He subsequently met fans at a special event at Mumbai's Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir.

Last year, on his 60th birthday, the reason was security. Shah Rukh announced that authorities had advised him against stepping out because of crowd-control concerns. He apologized to fans, explaining that the decision was taken for everyone's safety.

This year, however, the circumstances are different. There was no public announcement about crowd-control restrictions or an apology for not appearing. Instead, fans received a handwritten message and a glimpse of his upcoming film.

With King scheduled to release on December 24, 2026, Mannat also featured visuals from the film, including the dialogues "King Akela Kaafi Hai" and “Darr Nahi, Dehshat Hoon.”

For fans, the handwritten note was a thoughtful gesture. But as another November 2 passed without the familiar balcony moment, the absence of the superstar from the place that has become synonymous with his birthday celebrations was difficult to miss.
