Modi reaches Papua New Guinea after wrapping up Japan visit

The Indian leader will on Monday (22) co-host with Papua New Guinean counterpart James Marape the third summit for the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation.

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (21) concluded his “fruitful visit to Japan” and reached Papua New Guinea (PNG), the second destination of his three-nation visit that also includes Australia.

Thanking Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida who invited him to the G7 summit, Modi said in a tweet, “It has been a fruitful visit to Japan. Met several world leaders during the G-7 Summit and discussed a variety of issues with them. Gratitude to PM @kishida230, the Government and the people of Japan for their warmth. Leaving for Papua New Guinea in a short while.”

In PNG, the Pacific Ocean island-nation which Modi is visiting as the first Indian prime minister, he was given a warm welcome by its prime minister James Marape in capital Port Moresby.

“Wrapping up an action-packed visit! PM @narendramodi concludes his visit to Japan following two days of intense bilateral & multilateral engagements with key partners. PM now departs for Port Moresby for the next leg of his visit,” Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson of India’s ministry of external affairs tweeted prior to Modi’s visit to PNG.

Modi attended the summit of G7 nations in Hiroshima, Japan, where he held bilateral meetings with a number of world leaders, including Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Indian leader emphasised on a number of issues during the G7 talks, ranging from the Ukraine conflict to international food security.
