  • A two-month search for a missing 72-year-old Indian-origin woman in California has ended in tragedy after her body was recovered from a canal, raising questions about what happened during the final hours of her disappearance.

Ajit Kaur was reported missing on August 23 after she left the Casa Grande Apartment complex in Ceres, California, for what her family described as her usual walk. She never returned home.

On Saturday, October 24, a Turlock Irrigation District (TID) employee discovered human remains in the Lower Lateral 3 Canal, near Central Avenue and Keyes Road in Ceres, during one of the district's routine patrols of its canal network.

Officers from the Ceres Police Department (CPD) responded and confirmed that the remains were human. The body was subsequently sent to the Stanislaus County Coroner's Office, which identified the woman as Kaur on Tuesday (27).

Her identification brought a painful end to a search that had involved local police, specialist search teams, underwater technology and water district personnel.

The last known sighting: 1.45 am on August 23

According to police, Kaur was last seen at approximately 1.45 am on August 23 near Whitmore Avenue and Mitchell Road in Ceres.

Her disappearance immediately worried her family, who said that going for a walk was part of her daily routine.

Her daughter-in-law, Raman Atwal, said Kaur had left without her phone or identification documents.

"No phone, no IDs, nothing whatsoever," Atwal said, describing the circumstances as unusual for her.

The family also highlighted that Kaur had visual impairment in one eye and did not have access to a vehicle. They feared she might have accidentally fallen into a nearby canal.

    Did she enter the canal?

As investigators examined the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, detectives began considering the possibility that Kaur had entered the TID canal system east of her apartment complex.

According to the police department, investigators believed she "may have entered the TID canal located east of the apartment complex."

However, the exact circumstances of how she entered the waterway have not been established in the information released by police.

Detectives pursued multiple leads and conducted extensive searches around Ceres, including areas along the canal network.

The investigation also involved a specialist K9 unit from the Merced County Sheriff's Office. The dog was trained to track and locate missing people.

Underwater drones and an extensive search

The search extended beyond land-based patrols.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department Dive Unit assisted investigators by deploying an underwater remote sonar drone to scan the canals.

Detectives also worked with the Turlock Irrigation District to map possible water routes that Kaur could have travelled after entering the canal system. Investigators examined whether she could have reached the district's regulating reservoir.

Despite these efforts, the search did not locate her until October 24, when a district employee discovered her remains during a routine patrol.

The discovery site was also examined by detectives as part of the investigation.

Police offer condolences to the family

Following the identification, the Ceres Police Department expressed its condolences to Kaur's family.

"The Ceres Police Department extends its heartfelt condolences to Kaur's family and loved ones during this difficult time," the department said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with them as they navigate this loss."

The department also thanked the agencies and personnel who supported the search.

"We are grateful to the agencies and personnel who assisted throughout this investigation," it added.

For Kaur's family, the discovery has ended two months of uncertainty, but important questions remain about what happened after she left home for her daily walk.

While investigators had earlier considered the possibility that she entered the canal, the precise circumstances of her death have not been established in the information released by authorities.
