India’s Border Security Force (BSF), which guards the country’s border with the neighbouring nations of Pakistan and Bangladesh, has sought a court of inquiry after one of its sniffer dogs deployed at a border outpost (BOP) in Shillong in the north-eastern state of Meghalaya became pregnant and gave birth to three puppies.

According to reports, the court of inquiry has been ordered following the BSF rules that say that a dog of the force is not supposed to become pregnant in a high-security zone and while serving under the constant vigil of its handlers.

They also say that the dogs are allowed to breed only under the guidance of the force’s veterinary wing.

“In compliance of station headquarters, BSF Shillong, Ajeet Singh, Deputy Commandant, is hereby detailed to conduct a Summary Court of Inquiry (SCOI) to investigate the circumstances under which dog Lalcy (Female) of 43 Bn delivered three pups at BOP Baghmara on December 5, 2022, at around 10 AM,” the order read, India Today NE reported.

Special measures are taken related to the training, breeding, vaccination, diet, and overall health of search dogs in various central forces of the country, including the BSF.

The canines’ trainers are often deployed and their health is regularly checked frequently and the sniffer dogs that are posted on BSF camp, BOPs, or any other duty are not permitted to go out of sight.

If they are at a camp or outpost, there has to be a security cordon and no outside dog is allowed inside.
