FILMMAKER Ram Gopal Varma has openly acknowledged the shift in his filmmaking career after the success of “Satya”, admitting that his later works were driven by shock value rather than the honesty and integrity he found in his 1998 cult classic.

Writing on X in a post titled “A Satya (true) confession to myself,” Varma discussed his emotional reaction to the film’s January 17 re-release, which led him to reflect on his earlier success and the direction his career had taken.

He described how the success of “Rangeela” and “Satya” blinded him to the true essence of filmmaking, prompting a series of gimmicky projects lacking the sincerity of his earlier work.

“I became drunk, not on alcohol, but on my own success and my arrogance though I didn’t know this till two days back,” Varma wrote, revealing that his tears were not just for the film but for his own realisations about the journey since.

He expressed regret over how his obsession with future projects overshadowed his appreciation for the meaningful work he had already created.

Varma also acknowledged his role in making films like “Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag” and “Rakta Charitra” — projects that he feels did not match the integrity of “Satya”.

Reflecting on the experience of creating films, Varma compared it to “giving birth to a child without knowing the future,” and lamented that he had failed to pause and appreciate the impact of his own work.

His message extended beyond a personal apology, urging other filmmakers to avoid self-indulgence and to strive for sincerity in their craft. “Finally, now I took a vow that whatever little of my life is left, I want to spend it sincerely and create something as worthy as ‘Satya’ and this truth I swear on ‘Satya’,” Varma wrote.

Actor Manoj Bajpayee, who played a key role in “Satya”, praised Varma for his courageous self-reflection.

“The courage and fearlessness you always had in abundance!! Not everyone can be You@RGVzoomin,” Bajpayee said, recognizing Varma’s unique talent.

Varma reciprocated the compliment, assuring that a “brand new me” would emerge in future projects.
