Veteran Bollywood actor Tabu is known for playing complex women who rarely fit into predictable cinematic roles. Her latest character appears to follow that tradition, but with a political twist. The actor's first look from King100, Nagarjuna Akkineni's 100th film, introduces her as Mahanthi Jhansi Rani, an ambitious political leader whose presence is built around power, authority and an uncompromising belief in hard work.
The first glimpse was unveiled on Wednesday (4), coinciding with Tabu's 55th birthday. Rather than offering a conventional character introduction, the makers have presented her as a woman who appears comfortable exercising authority and making decisions on her own terms.
The most revealing part of the glimpse is a line delivered by her character: “There are only two kinds of people in this world: one who believes in hard work and one in luck. I hate luck.”
It is a short statement, but it establishes the attitude behind Jhansi Rani. She is not presented as someone who waits for circumstances to work in her favor. Instead, her words suggest a personality that values determination, ambition and personal control.
Why Tabu's character stands out
The first glimpse opens with Jhansi Rani taking an oath of office, immediately placing her in a position of political authority. The setting and dialogue introduce her as more than a character who simply occupies a powerful position. Her words suggest that she has a strong personal philosophy and expects others to recognize her authority.
What makes the introduction interesting is the decision to center a political leader rather than rely on a conventional romantic or dramatic introduction. The makers have chosen to establish her personality through a defining dialogue and an official moment that signals power.
Tabu's screen presence adds another dimension to the character reveal. The production house, Annapurna Studios, described her as having an unmatched screen presence and an intensity that commands every frame.
While the glimpse does not reveal the full nature of Jhansi Rani's role or her relationship with the other characters, it positions her as one of the film's significant personalities.
Tabu and Nagarjuna reunite
The film also brings Tabu and Nagarjuna together again, adding a nostalgic element for audiences familiar with their earlier collaborations.
The two actors previously shared screen space in Ninne Pelladata and Aavida Maa Aavide. Nagarjuna marked the occasion by sharing Tabu's character poster and wishing her on her birthday.
"Happy Birthday to Dear #Tabutiful. The world will never forget Pandu from Ninne Pelladata... and now you’ll be etched in our memories as 'Mahanthi Jhansi Rani'. You made this film so special (sic)."
His message also acknowledged the impression Tabu has left through their earlier work together, while building anticipation for her new character.
What we know about Nagarjuna's King100
Written and directed by RA Karthik, King100 marks Nagarjuna's 100th film as a lead actor, making it a significant milestone in his career.
The technical team includes Devi Sri Prasad as music composer, Raja Mahadhevan as cinematographer, Navin Nooli as editor and Sathees Kumar N as production designer.
The film is scheduled to release in December 2026.
For now, the makers have revealed only a glimpse of Tabu's Mahanthi Jhansi Rani. But the character's introduction suggests that the actor is stepping into a role defined by political influence and a strong personal philosophy. Whether Jhansi Rani emerges as an ally, an adversary or something more complicated remains to be seen.
One thing is clear from her first dialogue: this is a woman who does not believe in leaving her future to chance.
