Highlights:
Bollywood actors Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan are reportedly set to reunite on screen for filmmaker Ritesh Batra’s upcoming project, nearly two decades after the actors appeared together in Eklavya: The Royal Guard. French actor Mélanie Laurent has also reportedly joined the cast following Priyanka Chopra’s exit from the film.
According to reports, the project is currently being filmed in Mumbai. While details about the film’s storyline and the roles played by the actors have not been officially confirmed, the reported casting has generated interest, particularly because of the reunion between Khan and Balan.
The two actors previously shared screen space in Eklavya: The Royal Guard, released in 2007 in Parineeta in 2005. Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film featured an ensemble cast that included Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, Jackie Shroff and Jimmy Sheirgill. The drama explored themes of loyalty, family secrets and duty against the backdrop of a royal household.
Their reported reunion comes at a time when both actors continue to explore a range of projects across film and streaming platforms. Khan has appeared in films spanning comedy, romance, drama and action, while Balan has built a reputation for performances in character-driven stories and films centered on complex female protagonists.
Balan has received particular recognition for her work in films such as The Dirty Picture, Kahaani and Tumhari Sulu. Khan, and the most recent in Jailer 2 with Rajnikanth meanwhile, has featured in projects including Omkara, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior and the streaming series Sacred Games with most recent being Haiwaan with Akshay Kumar. Their contrasting screen personas could make their return to a shared project an interesting prospect, depending on the nature of their characters.
The reported addition of Mélanie Laurent has also drawn attention to the film’s international casting. The French actor and filmmaker is known for her performances in films including Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and the French drama Don’t Worry, I’m Fine. She has also directed several projects, establishing a career that spans acting and filmmaking.
Laurent’s reported involvement follows Priyanka Chopra’s exit from the project. The reasons behind Chopra’s departure have not been confirmed in the information available, and further details about the change in casting remain unclear.
Batra, who is directing the film, is known internationally for his work on The Lunchbox, the 2013 romantic drama starring Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur. The film received widespread critical attention for its understated storytelling and portrayal of an unexpected connection between two strangers. Batra has since worked on projects including Our Souls at Night and Photograph, continuing to explore intimate, character-focused narratives.
With filming reportedly underway in Mumbai, further details about the project, including its title, plot and release schedule, are awaited. If confirmed, the reunion of Khan and Balan, alongside Laurent’s reported casting, could bring together performers from different cinematic backgrounds for Batra’s next feature.
