PRIME minister Rishi Sunak has accused “certain sections of the media” of not treating Catherine, the princess of Wales, fairly following the revelation that she has cancer and been undergoing treatment.

In a post on X, the 43-year-old Indian-origin premier said Catherine or Kate Middleton, as she is also known as, has been “subjected to intense scrutiny and has been unfairly treated by certain sections of the media around the world and on social media”.

He posted a statement on his social media account almost immediately after Catherine, 41, announced about her ailment and  chemotherapy she has been receiving via statement on X and video.

“When it comes to matters of health, like everyone else, she must be afforded the privacy to focus on her treatment and with her loving family. I know I speak for the whole country in wishing her a full and speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her back in action when she’s ready,” Sunak said in his statement.

In her speech, Catherine, a mother of three children, thanked her well-wishers for the support and understanding. She said her family has been going through “incredibly tough couple of months” but she thanked her medical team for taking full care of her.

She also said that after undergoing an abdominal surgery in January, it was thought that her condition was non-cancerous but subsequent tests found that the cancer was still present.

“My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.

“This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family,” she said, adding, “We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment.”

Prior to the announcement, Catherine’s health and relationship with husband William, the prince of Wales, has been a subject of speculation both in the UK and overseas. Talk shows in the UK also discussed the matter regularly. Speculation was also rife over Catherine’s absence in public.

The issue received more attention over the last few weeks after four major news agencies pulled a picture of Catherine and family from their libraries over allegations that it was doctored. The princess took the blame on herself saying she has poor photo-editing skills but the talks did not die down. Rather, a second, also suspected to be doctored, image fuelled the fire more.

King Charles III has also been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and Sunak, while wishing the 73-year-old full recovery, said he was “shocked and sad” to hear the news but thanked that it was diagnosed early.
