INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi, Indian National Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other leaders of the grand-old party on Sunday (14) paid tributes to Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964), India’s first and the longest-serving prime minister on his 132nd birth anniversary.

In a tweet, Modi said, “Tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji on his birth anniversary.”

Sonia Gandhi offered floral tributes at New Delhi’s Shanti Vana, a monument in the memory of Nehru who was cremated there following his demise in May 1964.

Former Congress leader Rahul Gandhi posted a quote of Nehru while remembering his great grandfather.

“What we need is a generation of peace,” he said.

Rahul’s sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is a Congress general secretary, also paid a tribute to Nehru and hailed the contribution of farmers, soldiers and labourers while remembering the latter.

The Congress’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala praised Nehru’s contribution and said he played a major role in making India a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic.

Senior Congress leader and former central minister Kapil Sibal said, “We are the children of our Republic he cherished and nourished. He built institutions of the future. He celebrated diversity that is our strength. We should worry that what he stood for is slowly being demolished!”

The Congress, in its official Twitter handle, recalled Nehru who was also a freedom fighter, saying, “A hero of our freedom movement, a visionary who laid the foundations of modern India, a nationalist who stood fearlessly to protect India’s interests, an inspirational human who transformed the thought of generations, Pandit Nehru was a true son of Bharat Mata (Mother India).”
