FORMER Indian National Congress president Rahul Gandhi will be on a day-long visit to Amethi in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday (18). Her sister and party’s national general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is leading the Congress ahead of the crucial assembly elections in the state early next year, will be in Amethi the next day (19).

As per the Congress, Rahul will take part in ‘BJP Bhagao, Mehangi Hatao’ (Kick out the BJP or Bharatiya Janata Party, reduce inflation) ‘padyatra’ (on-foot procession) in Amethi as part of the grand-old party’s ongoing nationwide campaign ‘Jan Jagran Abhiyan’ (public awareness mission).

The Congress, which is eyeing to make a comeback in Uttar Pradesh, where it has been out of power for several decades now, launched its countrywide ‘Jan Jagran Abhiyan’ on November 14 to expose the alleged mismanagement of the economy by the Narendra Modi government at the centre.

Rahul, who was elected as a parliamentarian from Amethi three times, lost the 2019 election to the BJP’s Smriti Irani, but was elected from Wayanad constituency in the southern state of Kerala as he contested from both seats.

He is scheduled to participate in the ‘padyatra’ from Jagdishpur to Harimau in Uttar Pradesh with local leaders. He will also hold ‘chaupals’ (local meetings) in rural areas.

According to party sources, Rahul will be visiting Amethi, which had traditionally been a bastion of the Gandhi family, after almost two-and-half-years.
The BJP swept the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh in 2017 with Yogi Adityanath becoming the chief minister. The Congress got only seven seats despite allying with the Samajwadi Party, which was in power in the state before the BJP.
