Vijay's political action drama Jana Nayagan is finally headed to theaters after one of the most turbulent release journeys for a major Indian film in recent years. Delayed for seven months by certification disputes, court proceedings and a major piracy leak, the long-awaited film will now open worldwide on July 24.
The release marks the end of a prolonged battle that began shortly before the film's original January release date and unfolded alongside legal challenges involving the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Why was Jana Nayagan delayed?
Originally scheduled to open during the Pongal holiday on January 9, Jana Nayagan was submitted to the CBFC in December 2025.
After an examining committee recommended a U/A 16+ certificate subject to edits, the filmmakers made the requested changes and resubmitted the film. However, the certification process stalled when the CBFC referred it to a revising committee just days before its planned release.
The producers challenged the decision in the Madras High Court. Although a single judge initially directed the CBFC to issue the certificate, that order was later set aside by a division bench, sending the matter back for fresh consideration. The filmmakers eventually withdrew their petition, and the film was later cleared with an A certificate.
How a piracy leak created another setback
While awaiting certification, Jana Nayagan faced another major obstacle when a pirated copy of the entire film surfaced online.
According to reports presented during court proceedings, the leaked version spread across messaging apps, social media platforms and torrent websites before authorities intervened. Tamil Nadu Police arrested several people in connection with the leak, including a freelance film editor.
Prosecutors told the court the pirated copy had been viewed by nearly 12 million people before access was blocked.
Why Jana Nayagan matters for Vijay
Jana Nayagan has attracted significant attention because it is widely expected to be Vijay's final film before focusing on his political career.
The project was originally planned for release ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Instead, it will arrive after Vijay has assumed office as the state's chief minister.
Directed by H. Vinoth, the film also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Narain and Nassar. Music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
