As the US moves toward its 250th anniversary, communities across North America came together for a large wave of volunteer action. The 2026 BAPS Charities Spirit of Service Walk-Run drew more than 50,000 participants across over 100 cities.
Each city hosted its own walk-run event during the spring. Parks, town squares, and community centers became places of service and connection. Families, students, and civic leaders all took part. Fire chiefs, mayors, members of Congress, and community advocates joined volunteers in many locations.
The goal of the initiative was simple. It aimed to promote volunteerism and support local charitable causes. The events also supported the America250 initiative, which highlights civic engagement ahead of the nation’s milestone anniversary.
Across the United States and Canada, more than 90 organizations benefited. These included food banks, first responder groups, and cancer research organizations. The funds and awareness raised were directed to local needs in each community.
In Greater Houston, more than 2,200 participants gathered at Sugar Land Town Square. They supported initiatives focused on mental health, education, and law enforcement. Congressman Christian Menefee and Mayor Carol McCutcheon joined the event. Menefee spoke about the importance of community focus, saying, "We go on social media and think about ourselves. We watch the news and think about how it impacts us personally, But sometimes we need to focus on our neighbors, our brothers, our sisters, and our community, and that's what this is all about."

In Dallas, State Representative Matt Shaheen also took part. He highlighted the spirit of unity in service. He said, "We have gotten united here for a purpose. There is just joy that we experience together in serving others, and that is what BAPS Charities is all about."
In Edison, New Jersey, Congressman Frank Pallone joined a bipartisan group of officials. These included state senators, assembly members, and several mayors from nearby towns. Similar participation took place in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Michigan, and Mississippi. Local leaders walked alongside residents to support community programs.
In Jackson, Mississippi, Mayor John Horhn, State Senator Sollie Norwood, and Fire Chief Rasean Thomas joined residents. In Connecticut and Pennsylvania, lawmakers and county officials also supported local efforts. Each event reflected a shared focus on service and civic responsibility.
BAPS Charities uses a local funding model. This means local committees choose the organizations they support. This approach allows each community to direct help where it is needed most.
Several beneficiaries shared the impact of the program. The American Cancer Society in Jackson noted that support helps advance cancer research and patient care. The Carol G. Simon Cancer Center in New Jersey said donations help patients who rely on ongoing treatment and care. Family Promise of the Coastal Empire in Georgia highlighted support for homeless families moving from crisis to stability. The Rocky Hill Fire Department in Connecticut said the funds will help recruit and train volunteer firefighters.
BAPS Charities is active in nine countries across five continents. Its mission focuses on service in areas such as health, education, disaster relief, and environmental care. Its guiding belief is, "In the joy of others lies our own."
As America approaches its 250th year, the Spirit of Service Walk-Run reflects a growing effort to strengthen communities through shared action. The events show how local volunteer work can build unity and support long-term social change.
