THE RELEASE of Diljit Dosanjh’s film “Punjab ’95”, originally slated for February 7, has been delayed, the actor confirmed.
The movie, which highlights the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, will not be released as planned due to unforeseen circumstances.
“We are sorry and it pains us to inform you that the movie ‘Punjab ’95’ will not release on 7th Feb due to circumstances beyond our control,” Dosanjh announced via Instagram.
Directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies, the film delves into Khalra’s investigations into human rights violations and disappearances during Punjab’s militancy period.
Khalra’s work exposed the mass cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies in Punjab between 1984 and 1994.
The activist was kidnapped and killed in 1995. A decade later, four police officers were convicted for his abduction and murder, with their sentences being increased to life imprisonment in 2007 by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The movie, which also stars Arjun Rampal and Suvinder Vicky, was initially scheduled to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023, but was removed from the lineup without explanation.
Dosanjh recently shared the film’s trailer, in which he portrays Khalra. However, the film is expected to face cuts in India, despite a planned worldwide release without edits.
