Dolly Parton’s estate is facing a family dispute involving the nephew who was entrusted with announcing her death to the world.
Bryan Seaver, Parton’s nephew and former head of her security team, was responsible for sharing the news of her death on August 25. He said at the time that making the announcement was “something Dolly asked of me years ago”.
Less than a month later, Seaver has become the subject of a legal dispute with Parton’s estate, which is seeking a restraining order against him over alleged threats.
Why is Dolly Parton’s estate seeking a restraining order?
According to a court filing reported by Billboard, Parton’s estate alleges that Seaver made repeated threats toward her manager Danny Nozell and other members of her team.
The filing claims that some staff members became afraid to come to work or resigned because they did not feel safe. Seaver is alleged to have described himself as a heavily armed former security operative and made a series of threatening statements in messages to people connected with the estate.
One alleged message to a lawyer for Parton reportedly read, “I’m a killer.”
Another message allegedly sent to Nozell referred to Seaver as an international arms dealer and mercenary and warned that people should be worried about what he might do.
The estate also alleges that Seaver threatened to start a podcast aimed at damaging Parton’s business relationships unless he was paid.
These are allegations contained in the estate’s legal filing and have not been established in court.
What has Dolly Parton’s nephew said about the allegations?
Seaver has denied that his comments amounted to threats. Speaking to TMZ, he said he is a career soldier and military contractor and defended his claims about working in security and arms deals.
He described some of his exchanges with Nozell as private conversations between two people who were grieving Parton’s death.
Seaver also said that his comment about targeting people who had betrayed his family referred to specific business partners whom he believed had treated Parton badly. He has maintained that he stands by some of the comments but disputes the estate’s interpretation of them as threats.
Why was Dolly Parton’s nephew removed from her security team?
Seaver’s security contract was terminated on September 15.
A termination letter cited the “protection of the trust and beneficiaries as a whole” as the reason for the decision. It also stated that the termination did not remove Seaver’s personal interest in Parton’s trust.
After his dismissal, Seaver said he remained committed to carrying out what he described as Parton’s final wishes and protecting her family. The latest legal dispute comes as Parton’s estate deals with the singer’s considerable business and financial interests, including her music catalogue and Dollywood.
Parton had no children. Her husband, Carl Dean, died in 2025, and she is survived by several siblings and other relatives.
Seaver is the son of Parton’s sister Cassie. A chancery court in Nashville will now consider the estate’s request for a restraining order.
