WHILE leaders of G20 nations were busy negotiating over pressing issues at the 18th summit which kicked off in New Delhi, India, on Saturday (1), their spouses kept themselves busy with lighter work, including enjoying street food and millet delicacies and going for a cultural tour.

The high-profile guests were treated to a unique experience in the Indian capital as they had a special lunch at Jaipur House in Delhi. They then went on a guided tour of an exhibition showcasing artefacts at the National Gallery of Modern Art.

The spouses of the world leaders savoured millet-based dishes in lunch and indulged in some street food, Press Trust of India reported, citing a source.

Among those who visited the national art gallery for an exhibition titled ‘Roots and Routes’ were the first ladies of the UK, Australia, Turkey, Japan and Mauritius. The exhibition explored India’s civilisational heritage and interconnectedness. The gallery, which is under the Indian culture ministry, has a rich collection of artwork including paintings, sculptures and photographs.

The spouses also visited Delhi’s Pusa campus to gain insights into farming of millet, a food item which India is widely promoting internationally. This year has also been recognised as the International Year of Millets by international organisations such as the United Nations for awareness about millets’ health and nutritional benefits.

Spouses of US president Joe Biden and Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau were absent at the summit owing to different reasons. Why Jill Biden tested Covid positive ahead of the summit, Trudeau announced last month his separation from Sophie Grégoire Trudeau after 18 years of marriage.
