In a shocking incident, India wicket-keeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been seriously injured in a car crash and has been admitted to a hospital in Dehradun in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand on Friday (30). He was believed to be out of danger.

Full details of his injuries were not yet known.

According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, the medical team attending the explosive cricketer said he had lacerative wounds on his forehead with one above his right eye; a ligament tear in his knee; and abrasions on his back.

Initial X-ray reports said that there was no fracture and Pant did not suffer any burns despite his car catching fire.

He was set to undergo more scans.

The accident took place in the early hours of Friday when the cricketer from Delhi was driving to Roorkee, his hometown in Uttarakhand. He was first taken to a local hospital before being shifted to state capital Dehradun, the Cricinfo report added. The accident reportedly happened after Pant dozed off while driving, resulting in his car ramming into a divider and catching fire.

“Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant’s car met with an accident at around 5:30 am,” Uttarakhand Police’s director general Ashok Kumar was quoted as saying by NDTV.

“The incident took place at Mohammedpur Jat near Roorkee. According to what Pant said, he dozed off while driving and as a result the car collided with the divider and caught fire. He was moved to the Roorkee hospital from where he has now been shifted to Dehradun.”

The 25-year-old cricketer is not part of the India squads for the upcoming T20 and one-day international series against Sri Lanka at home starting on January 3. He was scheduled to go to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for strength and conditioning for the Test series versus Australia in February-March.

Pant’s most recent memorable knock in international cricket came earlier this month when he slammed 93 against Bangladesh in the second Test in Mirpur to help India win the series 2-0 and inch towards making their second successive World Test Championship final.

The cricketing fraternity, officials of the Indian cricket board, and the fans prayed for the cricketer’s speedy recovery.
