A purported suicide note allegedly written by Jeffrey Epstein weeks before his 2019 jail death has been publicly released after remaining sealed for years.

The handwritten document was unsealed by US District Judge Kenneth Karas of the Southern District of New York after a request from The New York Times. The judge ruled there was no legal reason to keep the note sealed.

According to Reuters, the note became public after The New York Times requested access to it last week. Judge Karas said the document qualified as a judicial record because it had been submitted during criminal proceedings involving Epstein’s former cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione.

Karas wrote, “No party has identified any competing consideration that would justify sealing the Note.”

Reuters reported that the judge did not verify whether Epstein actually wrote the note. The court also did not confirm how the document was handled over the years. The judge said those questions were not important to the decision to release it.

The Associated Press reported that prosecutors did not object to the request to make the note public.

The note was reportedly found after Epstein was discovered injured in his Manhattan jail cell on July 23, 2019, in what authorities described as a suspected suicide attempt. AFP reported that the note was allegedly hidden inside a graphic novel before it was discovered.

The handwritten message, written on yellow-lined paper, contains several fragmented statements. One line reads, “They investigated me for months — Found NOTHING!!!”

Another line says, “It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye.”

The document ends with the lines, “Watcha want me to do — Bust out cryin!! No fun — NOT WORTH IT!!”

Reuters reported that the note also mentions “15 year old charges,” which appeared to refer to Epstein’s 2008 Florida case, where he pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from a minor.

According to AP, Epstein was found on the floor of his shared jail cell with a strip of bedsheet around his neck about three weeks before his death. Jail records said he was breathing heavily but responsive.

One correctional officer reportedly wrote that Epstein claimed Tartaglione tried to kill him. However, later interviews with jail staff showed Epstein saying he had no issues with his cellmate and did not want “to make up something that isn’t there.”

Tartaglione also told officials he had no problems with Epstein. According to AP, he said he believed Epstein was suffering from a heart attack because his eyes were open and he appeared to be snoring.

Epstein died on August 10, 2019, while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges involving underage girls in New York and Florida. Authorities ruled his death a suicide.

Reuters reported that Epstein was alone in his cell when he was later found dead at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan.

AFP said doubts about Epstein’s death have continued because of security failures at the jail and missing CCTV footage. AP also reported that correctional officers failed to properly monitor him, with some allegedly sleeping or browsing the internet instead of conducting checks.
