Craze for football is not new in India. Even though the country is one of the poorly placed teams in international football, there is no dearth of excitement about the game, particularly when the FIFA World Cup is around.
The southern Indian state of Kerala stormed the headlines after the 2022 edition of football’s biggest show kicked off in Qatar in November. While fans were found erecting life-size cutouts of their footballing heroes, there were also reports of supporters of top teams such as Argentina and Brazil clashing.

Now, the state remained witness to another unusual scene. As Argentina and France locked horns for the top glory at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday (18) and countless fans gathered in front of makeshift screens to watch an epic battle, a couple came up with a unique idea on the day of their wedding which coincided with the final.
Sachin R and R Athira’s marriage on the special date saw the two individuals donning the jerseys of the teams they support. While Sachin wore an Argentinian T-shirt showing ‘Messi’ after the legendary footballer and the No.10 which is embossed in his jersey, Athira sported a French jersey which also showed ‘No.10’ and the name of Kylian Mbappe, the ace French footballer.
Hours before the big final started, the Indian duo married each other in the city of Kochi in Kerala.
According to a report from Malayala Manorama, the couple rushed through their reception and wedding feast to go to the house of the groom, Sachin, located about 206 kilometres in state capital Thiruvananthapuram so that they did not miss what turned out to be a sensational final which Argentina won on penalties after the match ended in 3-3 draw after extra time.
Kerala, which has a massive fan following for Messi, has been celebrating the victory since the final concluded with the supporters waving Argentinian flags and bursting firecrackers across the state.
Also in Thrissur, a hotel owner served free biryani after Argentina won their third crown, a promise that he had made.
