Lionel Messi says he hopes football enjoys a “bright future” in India as he wraps up a three-day tour marked by packed stadiums, celebrity meetings and intense fan interest. The Argentine star leaves the country on Wednesday after extending his stay by a day to visit the Anant Ambani-founded Vantara wildlife rescue and conservation center in Jamnagar.
The 38-year-old returns to Miami after appearances in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi, where thousands gather in hopes of catching a glimpse of one of the most recognisable figures in global sport.
Messi thanks fans for warmth and hospitality
Messi shares a one-minute highlight video of the tour on Instagram, capturing moments with cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, actor Kareena Kapoor Khan and young footballers. In the post, he thanks fans for their warmth and generosity across the four cities.
“What amazing visits to Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Kolkata,” Messi writes. “Thank you for the warm reception, generous hospitality and all the love you showed throughout my tour. I hope football has a bright future in India.”
Visit comes amid testing phase for Indian football
Messi’s message arrives at a difficult moment for the sport in India. The domestic season remains suspended due to the absence of a commercial partner, while the national team struggles following a run of poor results. Administrative disputes, now in court, continue to stall policy decisions.
Despite the challenges, Messi’s presence draws massive crowds and renewed attention to the game.
Stadium appearances draw mixed scenes
Messi does not play competitive football during the tour but makes ticketed stadium appearances in all four cities. The opening event in Kolkata turns tense after officials and politicians surround the star, blocking views for fans who paid high ticket prices. Frustrated spectators vandalize parts of Salt Lake Stadium, prompting organizers to cut the appearance short.
The remaining stops in Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi proceed smoothly. Messi poses for photos, shows warm-up routines and briefly kicks the ball with young players, drawing loud cheers at each venue.
“We will definitely return,” Messi says
Messi travels with close friend and former Uruguay striker Luis Suárez, along with Argentina teammate Rodrigo De Paul. Speaking after the final leg in Delhi, he says the affection shown by fans leaves a lasting impression.
“We carry all this love with us,” Messi says, adding that he hopes to return one day, possibly to play a match or visit again.
