Modi meets Bill Gates on COP26 sidelines

INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (2) met Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates on the sidelines of the ongoing COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland and discussed ways to further sustainable development.

The duo also discussed steps to mitigate the effect of climate change. “Prime Minister @narendramodi met @BillGates on the sidelines of the @COP26 Summit in Glasgow. Both discussed ways to further sustainable development and steps to mitigate climate change,” the prime minister’s office tweeted later.

Modi, who delivered a speech at the World Leaders’ Summit, the summit’s high-level segment, at the Scottish city on Monday (1) where he revealed India’s climate commitment, met other world leaders like Nepali prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. He also launched with his British counterpart Boris Johnson the initiative infrastructure for the Resilient Island States.

Modi reached Glasgow to take part in the crucial summit from Rome, Italy, where he attended the G20 Summit.

The Indian prime minister was also likely to participate in a side event organised by the United States – Build Back Better World and an event on ‘Accelerating Clean Technology Innovation and Development’. He will leave for India on Tuesday night.

Modi met Johnson on the sidelines of COP26 and said after the meeting that the latter accepted his invitation to visit India. He said the visit would be planned as soon as the circumstances allow. Johnson cancelled his trip to India earlier this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Heads of state and government of more than 120 nations are taking part in the summit.
