A new Netflix movie is bringing one of the most unusual stories from World War II to the screen, combining American football with the brutal reality of the Pacific War.
The Mosquito Bowl, directed by Peter Berg, follows four college football stars who put their sporting careers aside to enlist in the US Marines after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
But the film’s central football game is not simply a Hollywood invention. It was inspired by a real event involving players who were preparing to enter one of the bloodiest campaigns of the war.
What was the real Mosquito Bowl?
The Mosquito Bowl was a football game played by US Marines in the Pacific in 1944, as American forces prepared for the invasion of Okinawa.
The game brought together some of the most talented football players serving in the Marines. For the men involved, it offered a brief return to the sport they had left behind when they enlisted.
Among them was Tony Butkovich, a highly regarded college football player who had been selected in the first round of the 1944 NFL Draft.
Butkovich had the opportunity to pursue a professional football career. Instead, he chose military service.
The game therefore carried a significance that went far beyond the football field. These were young men who had once been focused on college football and professional careers, but were now preparing for combat.
Why did the game become so significant?
The tragedy of the story lies in what happened after the game.
The players were not simply competing in an exhibition match before returning to ordinary life. They were Marines heading toward a devastating stage of the Pacific War.
Butkovich was later killed in action during the fighting in the Pacific.
That history gives the game its haunting reputation. What might otherwise have been remembered as a memorable football match became connected to the lives and deaths of young athletes who had traded sporting careers for military service.

How Netflix is turning the story into a movie
Berg’s film is based on Buzz Bissinger’s book The Mosquito Bowl, which explored the football players who enlisted and the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the game.
Nicholas Galitzine plays John McLaughry, while Bill Skarsgård portrays Bob Bauman. Ray Nicholson, Tom Francis, Brent Comer and Pat McAfee also star.
The story follows the men as they move from the world of American college football into military life, eventually leading toward the game and the battle that awaits them.
The film is also very much in keeping with Berg’s interest in stories centered on soldiers and extreme circumstances. The director previously made Lone Survivor, as well as the television series Friday Night Lights, another project deeply connected to American football.
The Mosquito Bowl will open in theaters on October 30 before arriving on Netflix on November 25.
What makes the film particularly striking is that its most extraordinary element is also its most tragic: the football game really happened, and for some of the men on that field, it would be one of their last moments before the realities of war caught up with them.
