British prime minister Rishi Sunak has given indication that his approach to trade deals will be different from his predecessor Liz Truss, who was prime minister for a less than two months but set the tone for the country’s negotiations as trade minister, Reuters reported.

Following criticism of the deals the UK has struck since leaving the European Union, the prime minister has said he will not rush talks with countries such as India.

Talks with India did not yield a deal by the Diwali deadline as set by former prime minister Boris Johnson who quit in July.

“My approach will be one where we don’t sacrifice quality for speed,” Sunak said, adding he remained “committed to” getting a deal with the South Asian economy. “I want to take the time to get trade deals right.”

Rishi Sunak also expressed optimism on Wednesday that Britain and the United States could deepen their economic ties but he said he had not spoken specifically about a trade deal with US president Joe Biden.
