Kichcha Sudeep, a popular actor from the southern Indian state of Karnataka, has announced that he would campaign for the state’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the upcoming elections on May 10.

Sudeep has been working in the film industry, notably in Kannada films, for nearly three decades. He also hosts popular reality TV show Bigg Boss Kannada.

Addressing a press conference in state capital Bengaluru on Wednesday (5), the 49-year-old actor, who has also worked as a director and producer, said he was “basically expressing gratitude” to the state’s chief minister, Basavaraj Bommai, who he considers as his uncle standing by him during his formative years.

“I am here to express my support to him, and to say that I will stand with you,” he was quoted as saying by reports.

Bommai was seated next to him as Sudeep spoke.

However, the actor ruled out the possibility of contesting the election on a BJP ticket or joining the saffron party.

“I believe that it is our duty to support those who have stood by us when we needed them. Such a situation has now arisen for me, and I have decided to support Bommai maama (uncle),” the veteran actor said.

He also hoped that his fans would be sensible enough to understand his position.

Bommai said the actor would be roped in for the party’s campaigning in select areas.

“We will utilise his services by drawing up a plan to accommodate his busy schedule,” he was quoted as saying.

Results of the elections will be announced on May 13.
