Tokyo: Hockey team, PV Sindhu keep medal hopes alive on Day 7

India had some encouraging news on Day the seventh day (29) of the Tokyo Olympics while there were also updates that left the country’s sportlovers heartbroken.

First the good news…

In hockey, India defeated defending champions Argentina 3-1 in their penultimate Pool A game to reach the quarterfinals. India are placed second in the points table after in-form Australia. They will play Japan in their final pool game on Friday (30).

In badminton, PV Sindhu beat Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt in straight games to storm into the quarters. She will next play Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi.

In archery, Atanu Das beat Korea’s Oh Jin-hyek to make the men’s individual recurve event pre-quarterfinals.

In boxing, Satish Kumar beat Jamaica’s Ricardo Brown to enter the quarterfinals of the men’s Super Heavy (+91 kg) category.

And then the not so good ones…

In boxing, MC Mary Kom lost to Colombia’s Ingrit Valencia 2-3 in the women’s fly (48-51 kg) round of 16 bout.

In golf, Udayan Mane finished 60th with 5-over 76 in the men’s individual stroke play round 1 while Anirban Lahiri was tied 8th with four under 67 in the men’s individual stroke play round.

In sailing, Nethra Kumanan finished 22nd in Race 07 and 20th in Race 08. Also in sailing, Vishnu Saravanan finished 27th in Race 07 and 23rd in Race 08 in men’s one-person dinghy — laser. In men’s skiff — 49er — Ganapathy Kelapanda and Varun Thakkar finished 16th in Race 05 and 7th in Race 06.

In rowing, Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh finished fifth in the lightweight men’s doubles sculls final B.

In shooting, Manu Bhaker finished fifth while Rahi Sarnobat 25th in the 25-metre pistol women’s qualification precision.

In swimming, Sajan Prakash failed to reach the semis in the men’s 100-metre butterfly — Heat 2 after finishing 46th overall.
