A top Russian diplomat has responded to British prime ministerial hopeful Liz Truss’s warning that she would be ready to use nuclear weapons if needed and care little about “global annihilation”.

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson of Moscow’s foreign ministry, on Wednesday (24), wrote on her Telegram channel said Truss’s statement could serve as a perfect start to a new Austin Power series.

According to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency, Zakharova said, “This could be a perfect start to a new Austin Powers movie. Now, a female would play the role of the International Man of Mystery.”

‘Austin Powers’ is a series of American spy action comedy films, such as Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999) and Austin Powers in Goldmember.

Truss said a Conservative hustings event in Birmingham the same day that she was willing to hit Britain’s nuclear button if required, as the prime minister. Truss is the frontrunner to succeed outgoing British prime minister Boris Johnson as she has gained a handsome lead over her opponent Rishi Sunak.

Speaking to Times Radio host John Piennar, the British foreign secretary said the duty was an “important duty of the prime minister” and received a wide round of applause saying that she would have no problem ordering the nuclear weapon if the need arose.
