The Indian-American community in the Boston area is preparing for a grand celebration of India's 80th Independence anniversary with the fifth International India Day Parade, one of New England's largest annual events honoring India's heritage and the enduring partnership between India and the United States.

Organized by the Foundation of Indian-Americans (FIA)–New England, the parade will take place on August 9 and is expected to draw thousands of participants and spectators from across the region. This year's celebrations will revolve around the theme "Festival of Freedom & US-India Friendship," highlighting the shared democratic values and growing ties between the two nations.

The event will feature 15 colorful floats and tableaux showcasing India's cultural diversity and traditions. Community organizations, veterans, first responders, and members of the Indian-American diaspora from across New England will participate in the celebrations, making it one of the largest gatherings of its kind in the region.

A vibrant cultural program will accompany the parade, with performances by renowned dance and music groups celebrating India's rich artistic heritage. The festivities will also include a flag-hoisting ceremony, exhibits by community and nonprofit organizations, a vendor marketplace, and the Festival of Indian Cuisine, offering visitors an opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of authentic Indian dishes.

The Grand Marshals for this year's parade are Colonel Inder Preet Singh, Yudh Seva Medal (Veteran), and U.S. Navy Intelligence Specialist Maggie Lehman. Both will be honored for their distinguished service and dedication to their respective nations.

The event's Chief Guest will be Raghuram Sastry, the first Consul General of India in Boston. Organizers said his presence marks a significant milestone in strengthening India–US relations while supporting the rapidly growing Indian-American community across New England.

FIA–New England Executive Director Deepak Rathore said this year's edition is expected to be the biggest and most vibrant since the parade's inception.

"This year's parade will be the largest and the most vibrant edition yet," Rathore said, adding that the celebrations will reflect the values of freedom, democracy, cultural diversity, and the strong partnership between the United States and India.

The organizers also thanked Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey for proclaiming August 15, 2026, as "India Day" in Massachusetts for the fifth consecutive year. FIA–New England said the proclamation has become a cherished tradition that recognizes the significant social, cultural, and economic contributions of the Indian-American community to the state.

With colorful displays, patriotic celebrations, cultural performances, and community participation, the International India Day Parade has become a signature event in New England, celebrating India's Independence while strengthening the bonds of friendship between India and the United States.
