THE cabinet of India’s Narendra Modi government on Wednesday (13) gave nod for launching two new corridors of Phase IV project of Delhi metro railways.

The corridor will link the national capital’s Lajpat Nagar with Saket G-Block and Inderlok with Indraprastha and after it comes into operation, the Delhi Metro network will expand to 450 kilometres from the current 427 km, Indian information and broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur in a press conference in New Delhi.

According to an official statement, the cabinet approving the new corridors was chaired by prime minister Narendra Modi and it will be completed by March 2026 in stages.

Of the total expenditure of Rs 8,399 crore (£792 million) for the two new corridors, Thakur said, the Indian government will spend Rs 1,547 crore (£145.8 million), the government of Delhi Rs 1,987 crore (£187.3 million) while Rs 4,309 crore (£406.3 million) will come from Japan International Cooperation Agency as a loan, Rs 333 crore (£31.3 million) from internal accruals of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) and Rs 195 crore (£18.3 million) through PPP component.

While the Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block corridor will be entirely elevated and will have eight stations, the Inderlok-Indraprastha corridor will have 11.349 km of underground lines and 1.028 km of elevated lines with 10 stations. The corridor will also help commuters from the neighbouring state of Haryana.

“The Inderlok-Indraprastha Line will provide enhanced connectivity to the Bahadurgarh region of Haryana as commuters from these areas will be able to travel on the Green Line to directly reach Indraprastha as well as various other areas of central and east Delhi,” the statement said.

Once completed, the project will see 250,000 people travel in these lines, Thakur said. Around 6.5-7 million people travel through the Delhi metro network currently. The Delhi Metro is now one of the fastest growing networks in the world. The DMRC has already started the pre-bid activities and preparation of tender documents.
