Income tax raids against major India media group

OFFICIALS of the Indian income tax department on Thursday (22) conducted raids against major media group Dainik Bhaskar in several cities over alleged tax evasion, PTI reported cited official sources.

According to them, the searches were carried out in Bhopal, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and some other locations.

While there no official word on the matter from the department or its policy-making body – the Central Board of Direct Taxes – official sources said the action also involved promoters of the  media group with operations across several states in the country.

Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh said on Twitter that tax officials “are present” at half-a-dozen premises of the media group, including at its offices at Press Complex in Bhopal, the state’s capital. He slammed the move saying it is the “governance model” of the Narendra Modi government. He said in response to a tweet from senior journalist Suhasini Haidar who expressed her shock over the raids.
