New Zealand’s victory reshapes the WTC table
India fall to sixth in the World Test Championship standings after New Zealand secure a commanding nine-wicket win over the West Indies in Wellington. The result pushes New Zealand to third place and leaves India, runners-up in the first two WTC cycles, sliding one spot further down.
India were already under pressure after a 2-0 home defeat to South Africa last month, which had placed them fifth. New Zealand had been sixth before the latest shift in the table.
Australia stay ahead as the race tightens
Australia, the former champions, hold the top position with a 100 percent points percentage. South Africa sit second with 75 percent, while Sri Lanka and Pakistan take fourth and fifth place with 66.67 and 50 percent respectively.
New Zealand now also hold 66.67 percent, while India fall to 48.15. India could slip to seventh if England mount a comeback in the ongoing Ashes. Australia lead that series 2-0 with three matches remaining.
India’s next WTC fixtures come against Sri Lanka in August next year.
New Zealand boost their finals chances
New Zealand’s bowlers drive the win at Basin Reserve, where Jacob Duffy claims five wickets to bowl out the West Indies for 128 in their second innings. Chasing 56, New Zealand lose captain Tom Latham for nine but seal the victory through Devon Conway (28 not out) and Kane Williamson (16 not out).
The result gives New Zealand 12 WTC points and lifts them above Pakistan and India, bringing them level with Sri Lanka in third place. Their third Test against the West Indies begins in Mount Maunganui on December 18.
