India records 50,040 new COVID-19 cases, 1,258 fresh fatalities

INDIA saw fresh 50,040 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours to take its tally to 30.2 million while the number of active cases fell to 5,86,403, according to the Union health ministry data released on Sunday, June 27. India’s death toll now stands at 3,95,751 with 1,258 people dying of the virus in a day.

According to the government data updated at 8 am, active cases now comprise 1.94 per cent of the total infections. Recoveries outnumbered the daily new cases of Covid-19 for the 45th consecutive day with the number of people getting well going up to 29.2 million. The fatality rate was at 1.31 per cent.
While the national Covid-19 recovery rate has improved to more than 96 per cent, the weekly rate has come down to 2.91 per cent. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 2.82 per cent.

India’s vaccination drive, meanwhile, saw more than 64 lakh administered on Saturday (June 26), taking the total number of jabs given nationwide till now to 321.7 million, as per immunisation data published at 7 am.

On Saturday, 1.7 million tests were conducted in India to detect cases of Covid-19, taking the total number of tests done so far in the country to 401 million.

Maharashtra leads death toll
Maharashtra leads the death toll with 120,881 while Karnataka is second with 34,654. Tamil Nadu follows next with 32,199, Delhi with 24,961, Uttar Pradesh with 22,443, West Bengal with 17,583, Punjab with 15,979 and Chhattisgarh with 13,427.

The ministry has said that more than 70 per cent of the deaths reported so far have occurred because of comorbidities. “Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research,” the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification.
