India’s minister of state for electronics and information technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday (9) said the Narendra Modi government will regulate artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure that it doesn’t cause harm to ‘digital citizens’. He said this while giving a presentation in New Delhi on how far India has travelled in terms of digitisation since 2014 when the Modi government took over, NDTV reported.

“Toxicity and criminality have significantly increased on the internet. We won’t let attempts to harm digital citizens succeed,” he said, highlighting that 85 crore (850 million) Indians use the internet, a number which is expected to shoot up to 120 (1200 million) crore in another two years.

Chandrasekhar, who is also the minister of state for skill development and entrepreneurship, said crimes such as doxing (posting private and identifying details of individuals on the internet with malicious intent and without their consent) have been on the rise, adding that law and order are subjects of the state and the federal government would have to work with the states on strict initiatives related to it.

“There is a boost of digital connectivity in the country, and it’s the vision and mission of the government to ensure safety and security in cyberspace,” he added.

Chandrasekhar, who is a parliamentarian in the Rajya Sabha or Upper House of the Indian parliament, said consultations with stakeholders on the Digital India Bill will begin in June and that the new personal data protection bill will also be introduced in the parliament soon.

India is becoming a globally trusted partner for manufacturing under Modi’s leadership, the minister added.

“In the manufacturing sector, we are seeing the emergence of world-class factories, huge investments and the creation of a big number of jobs,” he said, the NDTV added.

The minister also said that India is witnessing the fastest degree of 5G rollout, adding that the country has a high degree of indigenous 5G components.

Modi meets OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

Modi on Friday held a meeting with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and said AI’s potential in enhancing India’s tech ecosystem is vast, among the youth in particular.

“We welcome all collaborations that can accelerate our digital transformation for empowering our citizens,” he tweeted, describing the conversation with Altman as insightful.

Earlier, Altman said in a tweet, “Great conversation with @narendramodi discussing india’s incredible tech ecosystem and how the country can benefit from ai. Really enjoyed all my meetings with people in the @PMOIndia.”

Modi replied, “Thank you for the insightful conversation @sama. The potential of AI in enhancing India’s tech ecosystem is indeed vast and that too among the youth in particular. We welcome all collaborations that can accelerate our digital transformation for empowering our citizens.”
