AN Indian bride died at her wedding in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh the groom later married her sister.

The original bride, Surbhi, died after a heart attack during the ceremony in Etawah. She had exchanged pink and yellow garlands with the groom, Manjesh Kumar, as part of the traditional Hindu wedding, reported The Times.

After she was pronounced dead by a local doctor both families decided to replace the dead bride with her younger sister, Nisha, the report added.

According to the report, Surbhi’s body was laid in an adjoining room when the second wedding celebrations began.

Ajab Singh, an uncle of the brides, said it was a “tough call” for the family to decide whether to continue with the wedding.

“We have never witnessed such mixed emotions. The grief over her death and the happiness of the wedding has yet to sink in,” he said.

Saurabh, a brother of the brides, said it was “hard to believe a dead body was in the other room — and a bride was being prepared in next one.

“We did not know what to do in the situation,” he told the IANS news agency.

The bride’s mother, Guddi Devi, wanted the wedding to continue after her daughter’s death, the report further said. But her son Gaurav said she was “in a lot of pain” over Surbhi’s death.

“She calls for her day in and day out as she was the eldest daughter. She had dreamed of doing wonders in her life. May she rest in peace,” Gaurav said.
