Previously, German defence major Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and state-run Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd signed a framework agreement to bid for the same project.
L&T and Navantia signed their teaming agreement at a ceremony in Delhi, in the presence of S N Subrahmanyan, L&T CEO and managing director; Augustin Alvarez Blanco, naval construction vice president and member of the board of Navantia and Spanish ambassador to India Jose María Ridao Domínguez.
“Larsen & Toubro and Navantia, Spain signed a Teaming Agreement (TA) today for the purpose of submission of a techno-commercial bid for the Indian Navy’s prestigious P75 (India) submarine programme,” the L&T said in a statement.
Under the strategic partnership (SP) model, the submarines will be built in collaboration between Indian defence manufacturers and leading foreign defence firms, aiming to reduce import dependence.
The bidding process for the P75 (I) project is expected to conclude in August, and the defence ministry plans to finalise the contract winner by the end of this year or early next year, official sources said.
As per the agreement, Navantia will be responsible for the design of the P75 (I) submarines, drawing from its S80 class of submarines. The S80 class submarines have undergone sea trials and are set to be delivered to the Spanish Navy by the end of 2023.
Navantia has significant experience in submarine design and construction, including involvement in the Scorpène class submarines built in collaboration with DCNS (now Naval Group) of France, which have been exported to Chile and Malaysia. Navantia has also been involved in supporting the Indian yard with the construction of Scorpène submarines (Kalvari class) in India.
Subrahmanyan expressed pride in collaborating with Navantia for such a crucial programme for the nation’s security.
“Navantia’s glorious 300-year-old track record in naval construction and technical expertise gives us a competitive advantage in this programme and offer the Bio-Ethanol Stealth Technology (BEST) and environmentally Green AIP solution,” he said.
Augustin Alvarez Blanco of Navantia expressed joy in being the design and technology partner for the P75 (I) program. He also mentioned their collaboration with L&T for the Landing Platform Dock (LPD) programme, the tender for which is eagerly awaited. Navantia sees these two prestigious programmes as significant contributions to fulfilling India’s defence needs and strengthening the excellent relationship between Spain and India, he added.
