PRIME MINISTER Narendra Modi will visit the US on Tuesday (20) at the invitation of president Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden. It will be his first state visit to the US and the eighth overall since he became the prime minister in 2014.
Modi will be in the US till Saturday (24).
The prime minister’s visit will commence in New York where he will lead the International Day of Yoga celebrations at the United Nations headquarters on Wednesday (21).
He will then head for Washington DC and will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the White House on Thursday (22). Modi will meet Biden and thereafter, the first couple will host a state dinner in Modi’s honour the same evening.
The same day, Modi will, at the invitation of top leaders of the US Congress, address a joint congressional meeting. It will be the second time that he will be addressing a joint congressional meeting, after 2016.
On Friday (23), Modi will be jointly hosted over lunch by US vice president Kamala Harris and secretary of state Antony Blinken, who is currently on a tour of China.
Besides the official engagements, the prime minister will meet the CEOs of a number of American companies, professionals and other stakeholders.
On Friday (23), Modi will address an invitation-only gathering of diaspora leaders from across the US in Washington DC.
On Saturday, the prime minister will leave the US for Egypt to pay a state visit.
