INDIA's external affairs minister S Jaishankar on Saturday called for deeper cooperation among Quad nations on supply chain resilience, technology, critical minerals and energy security.
Speaking at the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta, hosted by US secretary of state Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Jaishankar said he also raised concerns about non-market practices and growing economic pressures in the Indo-Pacific.
The meeting brought together Jaishankar, Rubio, Australian foreign minister Penny Wong and Japanese foreign minister Toshimitsu Motegi.
India’s priorities
Jaishankar said he stressed the importance of maintaining stability, driving prosperity and ensuring freedom of choice in the Indo-Pacific.
He also called for advancing agreements on counterterrorism, maritime security and capacity building, and urged a more contemporary Quad agenda with a practical approach.
The ministers reviewed progress in turning shared priorities into real benefits for the region, Rubio said.
Leaders’ summit planned
Plans are underway for President Donald Trump to host a Quad leaders’ summit in the Philippines in mid-November, on the sidelines of the ASEAN and East Asia summits.
Saturday’s talks were the third Quad foreign ministers’ meeting this year, after New Delhi in May and Manila in July.
Jaishankar also held separate talks with Rubio in Atlanta on Friday and is due to travel to Antigua and Barbuda for the Commonwealth summit, which begins Sunday.
