New Covid rules in Karnataka: weekend curfew, schools shut

THE southern Indian state of Karnataka on Tuesday (4) decided to impose weekend curfew in the entire state for two weeks starting January 7 amid the rising number of Covid-19 cases. The weekend curfew will be imposed from 10 pm local time on Friday till 5 am local time on Monday, the state’s revenue minister R Ashoka said.

During the curfew, pubs, clubs, restaurants, bars, cinema halls, hotels, multiplexes, theatres, etc will be allowed to operate with 50 per cent seating capacity.

The existing night curfew will continue to be in place.

The government also announced that all schools will immediately stop physical classes for all standards except 10th, 11th and 12th. Only online classes will be allowed for other standards for the next two weeks. It also decided that all colleges, except medical, paramedical and nursing colleges, will be closed for now.

An open official order, which was published by the government, said, “In Bengaluru Urban district, all schools and colleges except, Medical and Para Medical will remain closed with effect from 06-01-2022 except class 10th, 11th and 12th.”

All decisions were taken in a high-level government meeting in state capital Bengaluru on Tuesday (4) which was chaired by chief minister Basavaraj Bommai.

The government was set to hold another review in a few days and decide whether the rules will be extended.

Karnataka on Tuesday recorded 2,479 new Covid cases of which 2,053 are from Bengaluru. The positivity rate went up to 2.59 per cent and there were four deaths. On Monday (3), the state logged 1,290 cases of infections and five deaths.
