INDIAN-AMERICAN Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi announced his campaign for the United States Senate on Wednesday (7).
The 51-year-old Democratic party politician, who currently represents Illinois, in his campaign video attacked US president Donald Trump for ignoring the Constitution.
Krishnamoorthi claimed Trump is surrounded by his billionaire backers and MAGA extremists, who are threatening "our rights, rigging the rules to line their pockets, wrecking the economy."
He told NBC News that the 100 days of the Trump administration have made many people realize that the American dream is now out of their reach.
He blamed Trump and Elon Musk, who heads the department of government efficiency (DOGE), for unleashing economic chaos.
Krishnamoorthi promised to restore women's freedom to make their own health decisions, fight for gun control, and "keep these extremists from gutting vital programs like Medicaid, that help people."
Meanwhile, the New Delhi-born politician has been endorsed by the Indian American Impact Fund, which supports Indian American and South Asian political candidates.
“Krishnamoorthi has distinguished himself as a principled, results-driven leader focused on expanding economic opportunity, strengthening national security, and ensuring government accountability,” the organization said in its announcement.
The fund noted that Krishnamoorthi has been a "champion for working families" and consistently advanced policies that "invest in education, create good-paying jobs, and support small businesses."
Krishnamoorthi was first elected to the US House of Representatives from Illinois’s 8th District in 2016.
The fund had worked with Krishnamoorthi in past elections and feels his Senate candidacy represents a strong opportunity to elect a proven Democratic leader "who will fight for a fairer, more inclusive future for all Illinoisans."
Krishnamoothi thanked the fund for their support and said he was "incredibly grateful for their partnership."
He said as a proud Indian American immigrant and member of the ‘Samosa Caucus,’ "I know firsthand how crucial it is to expand South Asian and Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) representation at every level of government."
The other members of the ‘Samosa Caucus’ are Suhas Subramanyam, Ami Bera, Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal, and Shri Thanedar.
