SOUTH AFRICA made a strong comeback in the ongoing Test series against India on the very first day of the second match in Johannesburg by bowling out the visitors for 202. The hosts were placed at 35 for 1, trailing by 167 runs.

Captain Dean Elgar was batting on 11 and Keegan Peterson on 14. Aiden Markram (7) was the wicket that the Proteas lost and he was taken by speedster Mohammed Shami, for the third time in a row in the series.

Earlier in the day, India had a disappointing outing with the bat after their stand-in skipper KL Rahul won the toss and elected to bat. Rahul, who scored a hundred in the first Test in Centurion which India won by 113 runs, made 50 off 133 balls while Ravichandran Ashwin scored 46 off 50 down the order to help India go past 200.

Rahul and Mayank Agarwal (26) gave India a slow start but the loss of Cheteshwar Pujara (3) and Ajinkya Rahane (0) in consecutive deliveries pegged the Indians back. South Africa spearheads Kagiso Rabada and Duanne Olivier, who replaced Wiaan Mulder and was playing in a Test match for the first time since February 2019, picked three wickets each while Marco Jansen, who made his debut in Centurion, claimed four.

India lost wickets at regular intervals with none of the batters surviving long enough to script a big knock.

The visitors, who are leading the series 1-0, were without the service of regular Test captain Virat Kohli who did not play due to an upper back spasm.
Jasprit Bumrah, who made 14 key runs down the order, was chosen the vice-captain in the match.
