Police went on high alert after intelligence inputs from the southern Indian state of Telangana warned that the Popular Front of India (PFI), an Islamic outfit which the Indian government banned last month, was preparing to attack Hindu groups in Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, two other southern states.

Telangana intelligence said that the PFI was planning to target Hindu outfits such as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological mentor of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, in all three southern states, India Today reported.

The authorities issued a notice to keep an eye on the PFI and its affiliates. Orders have also been issued to prevent untoward incidents and flouting of law and order.

The cops reportedly alerted members of the RSS; the Hindu right-wing Vishva Hindu Parishad; and Hindu charities.

On September 28, the Indian home ministry banned the PFI, accused of radicalism and harbouring links to terror funding, after several raids were conducted in various parts of the country by central agencies.

Besides, PFI’s associate organisations — Rehab India Foundation, Campus Front of India, All India Imams Council, National Women’s Front, Junior Front, National Confederation of Human Rights Organization (NCHRO), Empower India Foundation, and Rehab Foundation, Kerala — were also banned.

Following the imposition of the ban, Tamil Nadu and Kerala saw attacks being carried out on Hindu outfits and activists. Members of the BJP and RSS were also targeted.

Following the ban on the radical outfits, Tamil Nadu and Kerala witnessed several attacks on Hindu groups and activists.
