Seven years after Avengers: Endgame brought the Infinity Saga to an emotional close, Marvel is giving the film a new connection to the MCU’s future.
The Endgame Encore re-release adds several new scenes and credits sequences that introduce major clues for Avengers: Doomsday. What once looked like a definitive ending for some of the MCU’s biggest characters now carries new implications for the Multiverse Saga.
Steve Rogers’ ending gets a surprising twist
Endgame originally ended with Steve Rogers returning to the past to spend his life with Peggy Carter. Their quiet dance appeared to give Captain America the happy ending fans had been waiting for.
The Encore version adds a major interruption. Loki arrives at Steve and Peggy’s home in his TVA attire, suggesting that their life together may have consequences beyond their own timeline.
The scene does not explain exactly why Loki has arrived, but its connection to the TVA and the rules of the multiverse gives Steve’s decision to remain in the past a new layer.
With Doomsday expected to deal heavily with multiple universes and timelines, the new scene could make Steve and Peggy’s story relevant to the events ahead.
Doctor Doom comes looking for Bruce Banner
Another new scene shifts the focus to Bruce Banner.
Following the events of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Banner is shown inside a military facility, where he has been working on a way to control his gamma radiation. He believes the Hulk is safely contained.
That changes when Doctor Doom arrives.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor Von Doom tells Banner, “I’ve come to collect you,” before taking him away.
The scene adds another established MCU character to Doom’s growing story. It also raises questions about why Doom needs Banner and what he plans to do with him.
Doom has already been linked to other major characters ahead of Doomsday, making Banner’s abduction another clue about the scale of his plans.
The multiverse is beginning to collapse
The biggest new tease comes in the post-credits sequence, which takes viewers back to the TVA.
Casey informs Mobius that two universes are on a collision course. What initially appears to be an isolated anomaly quickly becomes something much larger, with more universes beginning to collide.
Several familiar realities are shown as being destroyed, including universes connected to the X-Men, Fantastic Four and What If...?
Ke Huy Quan’s Ouroboros eventually sums up the situation: “The multiverse is collapsing.”
That development could be one of the most important pieces of the Doomsday setup. Rather than one universe facing a single threat, the new material points toward a crisis affecting multiple realities at once.
Endgame now looks less like an ending
When Avengers: Endgame arrived in 2019, it was designed as the conclusion to the Infinity Saga. The new footage does not change what happened in the original film, but it changes how some of those events can be viewed in the context of the MCU’s next chapter.
