THE Indian health ministry was set to depute a six-member team to the South Indian state of Kerala for effective Covid management as the state continues to report a surge in daily cases.

The team headed by National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) chief S K Singh will reach Kerala on Friday (30) and visit some of its districts that are reporting a high positivity rate of cases, the ministry said in a statement.

In a tweet, Indian health minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who took over earlier this month, said, “The Central government is sending six-member team to Kerala headed by NCDC Director. As a large number of COVID cases are still being reported in Kerala, the team will aid state’s ongoing efforts in COVID-19 management.”

The ministry also said the team will work closely with Kerala’s health authorities, assess the ground situation and recommend necessary public health measures to contain the virus’s spread.

Kerala has seen 3.3 million getting affected while more than 16,000 have died. With an active caseload case of 0.54 million, the state accounts for more than 37 per cent of the total active cases in India at the moment. Average daily cases are being reported to be above 17,000. The state has also reported a high case positivity of nearly 13 per cent cumulatively and 12 per cent weekly. Six districts of the state are reporting more than 10 per cent weekly positivity, the ministry’s statement said.

The Kerala government has also decided to impose complete lockdown in the state on July 31 and August 1 in view of the surging cases, ANI news agency reported.
