  • New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called for solidarity with Hindu Americans and urged communities to stand against hate after an alleged mass shooting plot targeting a Hindu temple in Illinois raised concerns about the safety of places of worship.

Mamdani joined Hindu New Yorkers in Queens for celebrations marking Navratri, Durga Puja, Dashain and Vijayadashami, sharing moments from the festivities on social media on Wednesday.

The mayor said the gatherings had brought communities together through faith, culture and shared traditions, but took on added significance following the alleged attack plot at a Hindu temple in the Aurora area of Illinois on October 11.

“This week, I was blessed to join Hindu New Yorkers in Queens celebrating Navratri, Durga Puja, Dashain, and Vijayadashami,” Mamdani said.

He described participating in garba dancing, aarti prayers and Sindoor Khela, a ritual associated with Durga Puja, as he joined worshippers at temples across the city.

“We danced garba, performed aarti, witnessed Sindoor Khela, and honoured the Goddess Durga,” he said.

The mayor also used the occasion to call for collective action against hatred, writing: “May we all join together in our shared responsibility to stand against hate and care for one another. Jai Mata Ki.”

Videos shared on social media showed Mamdani participating in garba with members of the Indian diaspora and joining religious ceremonies.

Alleged temple plot raises security concerns

Mamdani’s appeal came days after authorities arrested 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine, Illinois, in connection with an alleged plot targeting a Hindu temple in the Aurora area.

According to the report, Paporakis faces one count of making a terrorist threat and one count of unlawful possession of weapons.

Authorities said the suspect’s rifle jammed at the temple, forcing him to return home and preventing the alleged attack from proceeding as planned.

Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi said he and his family were at the Aurora temple when the teenager arrived, allegedly intending to carry out a mass shooting.

The incident has prompted concern among Hindu Americans about the security of religious institutions and the possibility of targeted violence. It has also renewed calls from political leaders and civil society groups for greater attention to anti-Hindu and anti-Indian hate.

The available account, however, does not independently establish the suspect’s motive.

Hindu festivals become a call for community unity

By linking his participation in the celebrations to the Illinois incident, Mamdani highlighted the importance of solidarity at a time when concerns about the safety of religious communities have come into focus.

Navratri honours the Hindu goddess Durga and her various forms, with celebrations often featuring prayers, fasting and garba dancing. Durga Puja commemorates the victory of good over evil, while Dashain and Vijayadashami are also associated with this theme across Hindu communities in South Asia.

For Hindu Americans, the festivals are important occasions to celebrate religious traditions, cultural identity and community ties.

Mamdani’s message extended beyond the festivities themselves, calling on people from different backgrounds to take shared responsibility for confronting hate and caring for one another.

His appeal comes as the alleged Illinois temple plot draws attention to the security of Hindu places of worship and the concerns of Indian American communities across the United States.
